Why Keys Break in the First Place

A key does not usually snap because you did something wrong. It snaps because it and the lock have been quietly wearing against each other for a long time.

The most common cause is a worn key in a worn lock. Brass keys are soft by design, and years of turning grind down the cuts and thin the blade. At the same time the pins or wafers inside the cylinder wear and start to bind. Put a thinned key into a binding lock, add a little turning force on a cold morning, and the metal fails at the weakest point, usually right at the shoulder where the blade meets the head. If your key has been getting harder to turn, or you have been jiggling and lifting it to make it work, the break was coming. That jiggling is the warning sign, and it is worth acting on before the key strands you.

Cold is the second factor. Metal contracts and lubricants stiffen in winter, locks get tighter, and Wilmington winters produce a predictable spike in snapped keys and frozen cylinders. A key that turns fine in July can bind in January.

If a key has already broken on you, the cheapest path is to stop and call rather than to improvise.

Once the piece is out, the job is not finished, because the key that broke is gone and you still need to get in and stay in. That is where the second half of the visit matters.

What Happens After the Extraction

Removing the broken key solves the immediate problem. It does not give you a key back. We handle that on the spot.

Better than that, when the lock allows it, we cut a fresh key to the original code rather than copying a worn key, so you get back the tolerances the lock was built for instead of duplicating the wear that caused the break. On an older lock that has been fighting you for months, it is worth rekeying the cylinder at the same time so the internal wear that caused the failure is corrected, not just worked around.
