Salt Air Eats Locks Here, and It Eats Ignitions Faster

Delaware City sits on the river at the mouth of the C&D Canal, and the air carries salt year round. That is not a scenic detail. It is the single most common reason locks fail in this town.

On houses, it shows up as a front door cylinder that gets stiff every spring, then stiffer, until one day the key turns halfway and stops. On cars it is worse, because a vehicle door cylinder sits exposed on the outside of the panel with a drain path that clogs. Brackish moisture gets into the wafer stack, sits there, and corrodes it from the inside. The owner starts using the fob exclusively because the key side “sticks,” which means nobody notices the mechanical lock has died until the battery in the fob goes flat and the physical key becomes the only way in. That is a Delaware City lockout in its most typical form, and it is entirely preventable.

The ignition side follows the same pattern. Wafers corrode, tolerances tighten, and the key starts needing a wiggle or a lift to turn. Drivers live with that for months. Then it seizes, usually in the marina lot or at the boat ramp, usually on a weekend. That is a tow bill plus a dealer rate plus however many days the service department needs. We originate keys on site instead. Lockouts. We open the vehicle without prying the frame or damaging weatherstripping. If a child or pet is inside, call 911 first, then call us, and say that on the call so we move you to the front of the queue.

Key fob replacement and programming. Almost everything built in the last twenty years needs a chipped key or fob talking to the immobilizer before the engine will crank. Broken key extraction. Old keys plus corroded cylinders is the exact recipe for a snapped blade. We extract without damaging the lock body when the body is still good.

The calls cluster in predictable spots. Battery Park and the Delaware City Marina, where boaters park for a full day and leave a fob in a jacket. The lots near the Fort Delaware ferry landing, where visitors head out to Pea Patch Island and come back to a locked car with no way to get home. The refinery corridor north of town, where twelve hour shifts mean a vehicle sits in a lot for half a day in coastal air. And Route 9 itself, which is beautiful and empty, and a bad place to be stuck.

Historic Doors That Cannot Be Drilled

The Delaware City historic district along Front Street and Clinton Street holds some of the oldest intact housing stock in New Castle County, much of it from the canal boom years of the 1820s through the 1840s. A lot of those doors are original, and a lot of them carry original hardware in the door edge rather than a modern bored deadbolt.

That hardware cannot be replaced with anything off a shelf, and the wrong locksmith solves the problem with a hole saw. Boring an original nineteenth century door for a standard cylindrical lockset is permanent, it is visible, and in a district with preservation standards it can create a problem far more expensive than the lock ever was. We rebuild the original lock body when the case is sound and fit a proper retrofit when it is not. Nobody cuts a two hundred year old door on our truck.

The Roads We Run
